A Credit Union

Our Client, a Credit Union, is seeking to fill the position of Accountant. This position is the head of the accounting function for the organisation and is offered as a two (2) year contract.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyses and presents management financial and accounting reports to Management and Board of Directors in a timely manner to facilitate decision-making
  • Prepares, analyses, and recommends actions regarding the performance of the business based on management accounts inclusive of ratio/trend analysis and other comparable analyses as appropriate
  • Forecasts, budgets, and benchmarks Credit Union Financial Statements and Operations
  • Develops and maintains the Credit Union’s internal accounting operating systems, policies and procedures
  • Coordinates and assists in the management of the external Audits, including preparation of financial statements with notes according to accounting standards
  • Prepares the annual budget based on input from senior management, the Board of Directors and Committees
  • Maintains ongoing communication with the Manager, informing of all pertinent information/irregularities and making recommendations to resolve same
  • Verifies and releases all ACH transactions in a timely manner
  • Verifies, releases and uploads Visa Debit / Credit Cards transactions daily in a timely manner
  • Ensures proper and timely reconciliation and adjusting entries to Balance Sheet and Income Statement accounts and any related ledgers
  • Establishes and maintains computerised accounting procedures in accordance with regulatory bodies and reporting requirements
  • Coordinates and integrate accounting functions to provide support for all other functional units within the Credit Union
  • Monitors the Credit Union’s finances, operational expenses and debt service obligations
  • Ensures the Credit Union is current in its taxation and other third-party obligations
  • Reviews Bank Reconciliation for all Branches
  • Monitors Bank accounts to ensure adequate balances to cover daily operational expenses
  • Monitors and transfers funds monthly to various Bank Investment Account and prepares Source of Funds documents
  • Maintains Fixed Asset Register and all accounting logs to monitor depreciation expenses
  • Maintains Fixed Deposit Register for renewals/withdrawals
  • Verifies/certifies data and documents prepared by staff in the Finance and Accounts Department
  • Lead, supervise, develop and recommend training for the staff in the Finance and Accounts Department, including recommendations for rewards and recognition programmes and disciplinary procedures as necessary
  • Ensure the maintenance of an efficient filing system for all financial documents and ensures that all documents are filed and accessible to management as the need arises
  • Analyses departmental needs and makes recommendations to management to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision
  • Performs any other related duties within the scope of a Middle/Senior Accountant

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • ACCA Qualified
  • Five (5) years’ experience at a supervisory level within the accounting function
  • Understanding of accounting rules and procedures, including IFRS relevant to the Credit Union activities
